Users Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
