Britain and America have secured a important bilateral deal that will preserve no import taxes on British drug products going into the American market.

Agreement Details of the Pact

In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has pledged to raise spending on drugs through the NHS. This move ensures that duties on these key goods will remain at nothing for a duration of three years.

This development is in response to recent warnings to significantly raise duties on patented pharmaceutical products, with increases floated up to double the cost.

"This arrangement between the United Kingdom strengthens the global environment for new treatments and brings long-overdue fairness to American-British medicine commerce," a release noted.

Trade Significance

Drugs represent one of the the United Kingdom's biggest exports to the America, which is easily the biggest destination for major UK drugmakers.

Export figures indicate that in the year to the end of last September, the UK shipped medicines worth £11.1bn to the US. This amount represented nearly one-fifth of total UK exports in that span.

"This deal secures employment, increases capital expenditure and paves the way for the UK to establish itself as a worldwide center for medical research," a minister stated.

Specific UK Commitments

The pact includes several specific changes from the British government:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will lift the affordability limit at which it considers new treatments to be too expensive by 25%.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a goal to increase overall public funding on treatments from 0.3 percent of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6% over the next decade.
  • Refund Ceiling: The amount drug companies must refund to the NHS to control costs will be limited at 15%. Previously, repayments exceeded 20%.

Recent Tensions

This agreement takes place against a protracted dispute between the sector and the ministers over drug pricing and approval rates.

This friction were exacerbated by arguments that American patients were paying a premium for the equivalent treatments than patients in the Britain and the EU.

Over the last 18 months, several major drug company projects in the UK have been halted or scrapped, while major funding commitments have been directed toward US facilities.

A senior figure acknowledged that the NHS must increase expenditure on drugs, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had decreased as a percentage of its total funding over the past decade.
