European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial news:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to cut security grants to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the case was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
