Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels down to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who threaten our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
